SMOKVICA

Village Smokvica is situated in the middle of the island on a hillside behind a large field. It is mentioned in 1214 the Korcula statute , but traces of pottery and settlement have been found that the village is older. The Church of St. Michael is built on a rock in the center of the village; all roads leading to Smokvica are visible from church. In the past this was important for the defence of the village. Today we know the battle at the site of Bloody Ropa, where they fought a great battle against the Turks, and to commemorate the battle they developed Kumpanija, knight’s game or  battle dance .

In the last 200 years, Smokvica has continuously had around 1000 inhabitants. The population is mainly oriented to agriculture and wine growing, so is Smokvica is home to the famous wine sort Posip. In the centre of village, near the church, there is a winery "Toreta", do not miss to visit and taste the wines of this region. Population  of Smokvica through the centuries and have remained  skilled farmers, believers and patriots.

The last 30-odd years the population of Smokvica have left their stone village, and  settled in Brna. Brna is a deep, protected bay, facing south and the open sea. As people are  increasingly turning to tourism, so the Brna has  turned into a tourist resort. In addition to the many apartments there is also a high-class hotel: Aminess Lume with 4 stars.

In Smokvica the motorcycle club Korcula (ex. Korkyra riders) has been active for over 10 years, and is known for its two annual events organized. These are the Moto Party which is organized in late summer, and each year attracts an increasing number of motorcycle enthusiasts who visit. This Moto Party has already crossed the Croatian border, and have a good time and friendly people here find and motorcycle enthusiasts travel from all over Europe. Another important event organized by the club is the caravan "of the Prevlaka to Vukovar" that takes place  every year on the day of remembrance of the city of Vukovar, in the eastern Croatian.
